A straight answer about the link

You have been pitched “backlinks” before, so here is the honest version. Your listing links to your site, and because you pay for the placement we mark that link sponsored — that is Google’s own rule. Anyone selling you paid links that pass ranking power is selling you a penalty, not a ranking.

The value is in three things Google and Bing do use:

1. Citations. Google ranks local businesses partly on prominence — how consistently the web names you. A listing showing your name, phone and website the same way your Google Business Profile does corroborates it. A directory that has you wrong, or half-empty, does not.
2. More of page one. When a customer Googles your shop’s name before calling, a profile on a site built entirely around vinyl lettering is one more page-one result you control — and one less slot for a competitor or an old complaint.
